The family language policy is a complex and dynamic construct subject to the experiences of each member of the family. These cases illustrate that an individual’s linguistic repertoire is a subjective and changing construction of the individual and a result of one’s life experiences. They show how each child’s linguistic trajectory contributes to the dynamism of family language policy in both the home and host countries. Our findings highlight the role of transnational children’s experiences in shaping and reconfiguring family language policy. The present study used linguistic autobiographies and semi-structured interviews to gather perceptions of family language policy and repertoire development. Following the arc of each family member’s repertoire development, we examine the relationship between family language policy and individual linguistic repertoires. Our study analyzes the family language policies of three transnational families within the context of Mexican–US immigration and return migration. The political and economic situation of the United States and Mexico has contributed to new waves of transnational families whose lived experiences in both countries have created a complex family language reality. The rest of the papers in the double panel and some other contributions will be collected in an edited book to be published in 2015. Because of the desire to produce a timely homage for the passing of one of the best known linguistic anthropologists of his generation, this special issue brings together six of these papers. All panel contributors shared Gumperz's insistence on ethnographic fieldwork, the importance of investigating communicative boundaries, and an understanding of the role asymmetrical, intergroup talk plays in legitimating power differentials. The panel, composed by some of his closest former students and collaborators, engaged in a double movement: looking backward at Gumperz's work and contributions to assess his influence and looking forward at recent developments in the field of linguistic anthropology. Five months earlier, already in failing health, he managed to come to the 2012 annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association to participate in a panel organized to celebrate his 91 st birthday.
